Engine Operation Mode Analysis: From Idle to Full by RPM
MANTRAZ turns engine RPM into an operation mode analysis for every engine in the fleet. You name the RPM bands, such as idle, maneuver, cruise and full, and MANTRAZ classifies every minute the engine runs. It is built for operators and fleet managers who want to know how their engines are actually being run, and what each way of running them costs in fuel.
Running hours do not show how an engine was run
Two engines can log the same running hours and be used in completely different ways. One spends most of its day at cruise. The other idles for long stretches and then runs at full RPM to make up time. Engine hours treat them the same. Without a breakdown, questions like "how long did we spend at full RPM this week?" get answered with impressions rather than numbers.
How engine RPM analysis works in MANTRAZ
The setup is simple. For each engine, you define RPM bands and give each one a name. From then on, MANTRAZ looks at every minute the engine runs and places it in one of those modes.
For each engine, you then see:
- how long it spent in each mode
- what share of its running time that was
- how many litres each mode used, based on the consumption rate you set for that mode
Because the bands are set per engine, each engine is judged against its own ranges. And because the litres come from the rates you set, the fuel side of the analysis stays on figures your team has agreed on.
From numbers to crew coaching
The real value is in the conversation it enables. Telling a crew to "go easier on the engine" rarely changes much. Showing them how many hours an engine spent at full RPM, what share of its running time that was, and how many litres it used there gives them a specific target.
It also works the other way. When the crew cuts time at full RPM, the next breakdown shows it, so improvement is visible and not just promised.
Operation modes in voyage reports
Operation mode data does not stay in one screen. Every MANTRAZ voyage report lists the time spent in each operation mode, next to distance, average speed and fuel per running hour. When one voyage used more fuel than another on the same route, the mode breakdown is one of the first places to look.
Who uses it
Fleet managers and technical teams use operation mode analysis to understand engine use across vessels and to set clear expectations for how engines should be run. Office teams use the numbers when talking with crews. Crews get feedback based on their own engine's data instead of a general instruction.
See it on the map
The operation mode chapter on the MANTRAZ homepage shows how a demo vessel's day breaks down by mode. To set up RPM bands for your own engines and see the result on your data, contact the team for a demo.
