Fuel Monitoring System Installation: How It Gets on Board

A MANTRAZ fuel monitoring system installation puts three things on board: sensors on the engine and tanks, a gateway that collects their readings, and a satellite or cellular link that sends the data to your dashboard. This page is for owners and operators who want to understand what goes on their vessels before they commit to monitoring.

What owners want to know first

Before any monitoring system goes on board, the questions are practical. What will be installed? Does it replace equipment that already works? What happens when the vessel loses its connection? And what does the office actually get once it is running? Clear answers to those questions matter more than a feature list.

What a fuel monitoring system installation includes

Installation works in four layers.

Sensors. Flowmeters, RPM pickups, tank level and GPS, fitted to your existing equipment. Main engine fuel is measured by flowmeters on the supply and return lines. Auxiliary engine fuel is usually estimated from running hours, and reports keep measured and estimated fuel apart.

Gateway. An onboard unit collects the readings and keeps them when the link drops.

Connectivity. Starlink, VSAT or cellular near the coast sends the data ashore. Vessels beyond cellular range can switch to satellite mode, which still sends GPS position, engine RPM and auxiliary engine readings.

Dashboard. Your team follows the fleet live, with alarms and reports.

Once the system is live

When the vessel is connected, the office starts receiving the data the rest of MANTRAZ is built on. From there:

  • alerts reach your team in the app and by email
  • daily, weekly or monthly PDF reports arrive on the schedule you set
  • the live map shows position, speed and status for each vessel
  • per-engine fuel consumption, bunkering data and the Remain On Board balance become available in the dashboard

Does it need a constant internet connection?

No. Vessels beyond cellular range switch to satellite mode, which still sends GPS position, engine RPM and auxiliary engine readings. Flowmeter fuel, temperature and power meter readings resume once the vessel is back in cellular or Starlink range.

Planning the installation with you

Every fleet is set up differently, so installation starts with a conversation. The MANTRAZ team walks you through the system on data like yours and plans the installation with you.

Who is involved

Owners and fleet managers decide which vessels to equip and what they need to see. Technical teams know what is fitted on each vessel and where each reading comes from. Once it is live, the office team, fleet managers and anyone else with access use the dashboard, alerts and reports.
